Gilby Clarke
in concert
December 20, 2008

We had spotlighted, this week, one of the most talented guitar players in rock 'n' roll today, Gilby Clarke. I had the good fortune of seeing him perform on December 20, 2008 at Club Red in Tempe, AZ. It's great to see such a fantastic performer in a small intimate night club versus a huge stadium.

Performing with Gilby were Muddy Stardust on bass (and vocals), and Dennis Morehouse on the drums. All were just phenomenal. Muddy has, of course, performed with Gilby in the past as part of Col. Parker, which was formed in 1999, along with ex-Stray Cats drummer, Slim Jim Phantom, and keyboardist, Teddy "Zig Zag" Andreadis.

Along with Gilby's solo material, they performed a little MC5, and some Kill for Thrills. Muddy sang "30 Days in the Hole", and did a mighty fine job of it, too. It was also great fun to watch Dennis on the drums. He pounds the hell out of them and his head is a blur of his long dreadlocks thrashing about. At one point, they slowed it down a bit with Dylan's', "Knocking on Heaven's Door", and they finished up with "Cure Me or Kill Me", with it's strong guitar riffs, from Gilby's album, "Pawnshop Guitars", followed by "Tijuana Jail", where Dennis really beat the skins.

The crowd of 200-300 people were completely into the show, and
wanted more. They were die hard fans.
After the band left the stage, well known, at least to those of us in the local rock 'n' roll circuit, former owner of The Mason Jar, a notorious club back in the day where so many of the great bands of the 80s played at one time or another, Franco Gagliano (whom Gilby also knows), hopped up on stage and asked the crowd if they wanted more. And, of
course, the crowd responded quite loudly that, yes, they wanted more.

A little sidebar here. It was great to see Franco. I hadn't seen him in about 14 years, and we go way back. So, it was nice to catch up.

Anyway, back to the story. I'm not sure if Gilby and the others were planning to come back out again or not, but after Franco got the crowd riled up, they just about had to. So, they came out and did Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen", followed by a kick-ass adrenaline pumping version of one of my favorite songs, Guns N' Roses' "It's So Easy".

All in all, it was a great show. To be honest, I
was so busy snapping pictures that I didn't take note of all the songs they did. So, I can't remember now every song they performed. That's why I've just pointed out some of the highlights here. But, suffice to say, they did not disappoint. I had a great time!

After the show was over, Gilby was mobbed by fans wanting autographs and pictures. I was quite impressed with his patience, and his ability to totally focus on the person he was talking to, giving them his undivided attention. It wasn't until he was finished with everyone that I was able to get my interview with him. But, it was worth the wait. So, make sure to read my interview with Gilby.

Also, you can check out some other photos from the show on my
MySpace page, so be sure to take a look at those, too.

This show took place on Friday May 22, 2009 at Club Red in Tempe, Arizona. It was a packed house, but thanks to some rain that moved in it wasn't too hot, just a bit muggy. I want to thank Ron Kennedy for providing me with a pass so I could cover the show.

Incidently, Ron, as well as being the booking manager for the club, plays in a band called Crooked Head Annie. They went on just before KEEL hit the stage and got everyone rockin' and primed for the rest of the evening with their sizzling covers, expertly sung by another friend, Norm Saavedra. Great job guys!

I have to say that we here in the Phoenix area were very priviliged to have KEEL perform here at one of very few club dates that they will be scheduling this year. For the most part, if you want to see KEEL this year you will need to attend one of the large festivals where they will be performing.

KEEL hit the stage running with "Reason To Rock". Right away it was clear that this was going to be a great night. The band hasn't missed a beat with the passage of time. If I closed my eyes it was like I was hearing the band perform in 1987. It was killer hearing this band live again after all these years. Their music takes me back and brings back some great memories.

They then went right into "Rock N Roll Outlaw" to the roar of the appreciative crowd. Ron's vocals were strong. Marc and Bryan were both steamin' on their guitars. New member Geno, on bass, fit right in, as though he's always been a part of this tremendous band, and Dwain beat the drums like a wild man. In fact, I had trouble getting photos of Dwain, the way he was thrashing on his kit!

"Evil, Wicked, Mean & Nasty" was the next tune. It had the audience pumpin' their fists in the air as they sang along. The band's energy never let up and neither did the audience's. The set continued on with "Somebody's Waiting", "Speed Demon", "Because The Night", "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", "Electric Love", "Cherry Lane", "Let's Spend The Night Together", "Raised On Rock", "I Said The Wrong Thing To The Right Girl", "Tears Of Fire" and a rousing finale with "The Right To Rock".

All in all, KEEL sounded great as ever. I'm very happy that I got to see them again after all these years. I hope they continue on with a new album and more touring. I'd love to hear new material from this great, great band. You can keep up with them by visiting their MySpace page and website. And, if you haven't done so already, make sure you read the awesome interview I did with Ron Keel.

Great White, the headliners that night, took the stage next. It's actually been quite a number of years since I've seen this band, too, even though I love their music. It's just one of those things where there was always something that interfered with me seeing them when they came through town. What a great double bill this was, though! Two awesome bands in one night.

They kicked off their set with "Situation" from their new album, Rising. I really like the new song and can't wait to hear the rest of the album (and, of course, I'll have a review for you, too). Great White's set list for the night featured songs spanning the band's discography.

"Old Rose Motel" was next, followed by the classic, "Face The Day". Then more newer music with "Back To The Rhythm". The band, Mark Kendall (guitar), Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards), Scott Snyder (bass) and Audie Desbrow (drums), was smokin'! I have to also give props to Jack Russell, because, as he told the audience, he had fractured some vertebrae and his pelvis a while back and was advised by his doctor not to tour, but he's doing it anyway. Now that's committment! So, he wasn't hopping around the stage, but that's no matter, because his vocals were right on the money.

The next song was "On Your Knees" followed by the hit ballad "Save Your Love". Then they performed "All Or Nothing" and "Call It Rock N' Roll", which had the joint jumpin'. They moved on to "Desert Moon", then "Rollin' Stone". The band then closed out the night with their huge hits "Rock Me", "Can't Shake It" and "Once Bitten Twice Shy".

It was a great mix of tunes performed brilliantly. Great White never disappoints and this night was no exception. As I said earlier, I'll soon have a review of their newest CD, Rising, so keep an eye out for that. I hope we have many, many more years of Great White in our future. They are simply one of the best bands in rock 'n' roll, no doubt about it.
