"Step inside this madhouse," UZI frontman Nicholas Flynt belted out back in 1988.
UZI is a hard rock band from Chicago from the late 80s/early 90s. Although they did not break into the realm of superstardom like a Guns N’ Roses or Skid Row, their music speaks for itself, and could stand next to any band from that time and make them nervous.
The sound that the band brings sounds as if a rock n’ roll mad scientist took parts of Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Skid Row, put them all together, and UZI was born. One song that will catch the ear is the track "American Dream". Lyrically the song tells a similar story to that of "My Michelle" by Guns N’ Roses. Of course, there is the title track, "Madhouse", which is described in the pull-out booklet as, "inspired by the goth and industrial currents in music."
"Away From The Heart" was the band's number one hit, granted it was on local radio station WVVX, but the song showed a different side of the band. On the hard, rock star exterior lies a guy with a soft side, and he isn’t afraid to show it. For those who enjoy the sound of analog recordings, that sound is ever present on the track "Raise Hell".
Other tracks that are worth taking a long hard listen to are "Mutha's Knockin' ", "Do What I Do" and "Wreckerd Man". For those true 80s metalheads that are still hanging onto their teenage years, Enoian Records has found a band that will take you back to your high school years, waiting to go see your favorite local band. UZI’s Madhouse is worth the purchase.
