Heavy metal is back!
The super group Freakshow is out on the prowl with their debut self-titled album. The hard driving rock brings a strange cross of Miss Crazy, Cinderella, and Quiet Riot. The reason being is that it features members from the aforementioned bands. With Miss Crazy’s singer Marcus Allen Christopher out front on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jeff LaBar from Cinderella providing the shredding riffs, Quiet Riot's thunder god Frankie Banali on drums, and Tony Franklin on bass, who played in The Firm along side greats like Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, this band seems destined to take over the heavy metal radio waves by storm.
The album is a great compilation of hard rock featuring the driving, fist pumping anthems that were popular in the 80s. Track one, "Welcome to the Freakshow," says it all. A song with a driving beat that welcomes the ears, and gets the listener ready for a barrage of pounding beats, and good old fashioned rock n’ roll at it’s best. "Four Leaf Clover," a hard driving song that can send some mixed messages, is a typical dirty love song, or is there some malevolent meaning with the sinister sounding bass and guitar licks?
Freakshow continues to pour on the old school sound with the song "Looking Back At Me," which sounds like 80’s hair metal sleaze. The song’s riff sounds something like something Motley Crue, circa the Girls, Girls, Girls era, would have written, and Freakshow has captured that moment in time perfectly with this song. "Ripper" states something that any metal head will agree with, "Rock and roll is here to stay." The song is a driving, thrashy song that will make those who like faster rock very happy.
There are many songs on here that any fan of Miss Crazy, Quiet Riot, or Cinderella will like, tracks like "Everyone," "Burning Me," and "It’s Really Over." As every band from the era did, there is a soft song on the album that closes it out. "Mistaken" is an acoustic song that will cool the listener down after the intense 45 minutes of rocking.
Christopher’s vocals are crisp, LaBar’s guitar playing is sharp, Franklin’s bass is booming, and Banali’s drums are driving, which makes for a great album by this super group. They bring a refined raw sound back into the face of rock. We can only hope that there will be a tour in the coming months, and that these guys can keep it together, unlike past super groups. Freakshow’s debut is a must buy. Do not pass up on it if you have the chance to get it. It is currently available on iTunes and on CD.
